OLATHE, Kan. -- The Olathe police chief issued an apology Wednesday to an anti-abortion activist.

Ronald Brock drives a truck painted with anti-abortion messages and pictures. His protest on wheels has been in Olathe for a few days.

Brock said an Olathe police sergeant told him to leave town or he might be ticketed and his truck impounded.

"I have met with Mr. Brock, and given him an apology on behalf of the Olathe Police Department," Chief Janet Thiessen said.

Thiessen said she made the apology after reviewing the case. She called it a misapplication of law.

"Our role as law enforcement officers is to strictly uphold the Constitution. And in this particular case, I don't believe that we did that," Thiessen said. - http://www.kmbc.com/news/15840484/detail.html

Good for her. What too few people seem to understand is that popular speech doesn't need First Amendment protection; it is the unpopular speech, the provocative speech, that does, and that protection was placed in the First Amendment to the Constitution. I think it important to note that placement. Freedom of expression was the first thing on the minds of the people who founded the US. Certainly there are reasonable limitations; the oft-repeated prohibition of shouting "Fire" in a crowded place, slander, libel, defamation, and outright lying about another, but in matters of opinion, our Constitution protects the people's right to speak from the government censorship, and that includes local government.
