Hypocrisy is in the eye of the beholder. CBS, NBC, ABC, VIACOM, and everyone else is painfully conscious of the bottom line. When the sponsors start leaving in droves, their own grandmothers are liable to be thrown overboard. Did anyone think Don Imus was irreplaceable ? It's not like he was president of the U.S.A.
CBS radio is subject to FCC regulations, as well as responsible to shareholders. VHS and MTV, being cable operations, are not subject to regulation; they are not using the public airwaves.
Anyone who sees this situation (with Imus' comments) as a free speech issue is in error. Imus still has whatever rights he had before he made his controversial comment. What he doesn't have is a job that pays him to make comments. Imus was a paid employee, paid for his ability to draw advertising dollars. He lost his job because his employer(s) felt he would not draw those advertising dollars in the future. When entertainers lose audience appeal, they generally suffer a loss of income as well.
