What's going on with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger? I've been seeing him in the news talking smack about Bush and co. and against the War? I've heard people call him "A Democrat in Republican's clothing"? I've even heard rumors about him possibly trying to run for President? Is that even Legal? Thought you had to be born a U.S. citizen to be Pres.?

Not to say that I'm sad to hear any of this. Quite the reverse, actually. I'de just like to know what's really going on; all rumors, second-hand tid-bits and 10 second news clips set aside.

Inquiring minds want to know!

Constitution of the United States

Article II

Section 1, No. 4
No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

Schwarzenegger is not a "natural born Citizen:, and thus, is not eligible for the Presidency under current law. There would have to be an amendment to the Constitution in order for him to be eligible.

Constitution of the United States

Article V

The Congress, whenever two-thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this constitution, or on the application of the legislatures of two-thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which , in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three-fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress: Provided, that no amendment which may be made prior to the year 1808, shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.
*******************************************
It is highly unlikely that such an amendment could be enacted in time for the 2008 election; there simply isn't enough time. It's my opinion that no such amendment will be enacted in the foreseeable future.

I think the point is moot regarding Schwarzenegger. You are right that many people are calling him "a Democrat in Republican's clothing." Unfortunately for Arnold, a great many of them are Republicans.
