Who pays for abortions in the US? What happens if the woman has no funds or insufficient funds? Does she have to carry the foetus to term? Or is the right to an abortion made available to all, without cost to the patient?

Low income residents can apply for Medicaid (insurance) benefits. This insurance would allow a person to get an abortion at a doctor's office which takes Medicaid. This welfare is paid with tax dollars.

I once had an insurance through my work which would pay for prenatal care and delivery or it would pay for an abortion. It would NOT pay for my birth control pills. Roll Eyes

It looks as if different rules now apply.

quote:
Cost of Abortion

How much does a surgical abortion cost?
* In 2001, the average charge for a surgical abortion at 10 weeks’ gestation was $468; but since most abortions in the United States are performed at low-cost clinics, women on average paid $372 for the procedure. (31)

How much does a medical abortion cost? In 2001, the average charge for a medical abortion was $487. (31)

Who pays for abortions?
* Some 74% of women pay for abortions with their own money; 13% of abortions are covered by Medicaid, and 13% are billed directly to private insurance. Some women who pay for the procedure themselves may receive insurance reimbursement later. (31)

Does the U.S. government help poor women who need abortions pay for them?
* Congress has barred the use of federal Medicaid funds to pay for abortions, except when the woman’s life would be endangered by a full-term pregnancy, or in cases of rape or incest. As of November 2006, 17 states used their own funds to subsidize abortion for poor women. (38) In actuality, however, about half of these states provide little to no funds to cover these services. (39)

How many states prohibit public funding of abortions?
* A total of 32 states and the District of Columbia prohibit public funding of abortions, except in cases of life endangerment, rape or incest. South Dakota only provides public funding of abortions when necessary to protect the woman’s life, which is not in compliance with the federal Medicaid statute. (38)

I also found this from the NAF:

quote:
Q. Where can I get a free abortion?
A. Although you may be able to receive financial assistance from local or national abortion funds, it is unusual to obtain care cost-free. Call the NAF Hotline for more information on funding assistance.

Q. Does insurance cover the cost of an abortion?
A. Almost two-thirds of insurance companies cover elective abortion to some degree. Contact your insurance company to find out if you are covered.

Q. Does military insurance cover the cost of an abortion?
A. At this time, military health plans cover abortion only in cases of life endangerment.

Q. Does Medicaid or other state-assisted health insurance cover the cost of an abortion?
A. Medicaid is only required to cover abortion in cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment. However, some states do cover abortion as part of their Medicaid policies.

1)So is this right: the one category of women whose children are likely to be a 'burden' on the taxpayers, as they themselves are, is the one category that may well be unable to get an abortion (unless, that is, they can show e.g. rape or the father is some close blood relative)?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to give them free abortion without question?

I leave aside, on purpose, the broader questions beyond money. ( We have enough problems where abortion is free to everyone regardless of their wealth or poverty Big Grin )

2)What is the significance, if any, in the ten weeks mentioned in the links? Is abortion restricted after ten weeks?

I suppose it would be cheaper to have the woman abort the baby than to have the state pay for raising the child. I think too many women use abortion as a means of birth control. This has become an increasing problem.

I'm really not sure about the 10 weeks. I think abortions are done up to the second trimester. There is a partial birth abortion ban which states that abortions can not be performed after 20 weeks (4.5 months). I want to say that the baby, at that point, can make it on its own. I think with a partial birth abortion the doctor delivers the baby and kills it with scissors. I'm serious.

I think many women wait as long as they can so they can raise the money.

I hope you get more responses without people putting their personal beliefs on abortion in this thread.
