"...you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32

The full story behind Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s 9/11 sermon
One of the most controversial statements in this sermon was when he mentioned “chickens coming home to roost.” He was actually quoting Edward Peck, former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq and deputy director of President Reagan’s terrorism task force, who was speaking on FOX News. That’s what he told the congregation.

He was quoting Peck as saying that America’s foreign policy has put the nation in peril:

“I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday did anybody else see or hear him? He was on FOX News, this is a white man, and he was upsetting the FOX News commentators to no end, he pointed out, a white man, an ambassador, he pointed out that what Malcolm X said when he was silenced by Elijah Mohammad was in fact true, he said Americas chickens, are coming home to roost.”

“We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff that we have done overseas is now brought right back into our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.

“Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred. And terrorism begets terrorism. A white ambassador said that y’all, not a black militant. Not a reverend who preaches about racism. An ambassador whose eyes are wide open and who is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice upon which we are now poised. The ambassador said the people we have wounded don’t have the military capability we have. But they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them. And we need to come to grips with that.”

Of course, there are those who don't want to know the truth; it is, apparently, too upsetting for them.

And then there is smear, lies & propaganda, which this is certainly a classic case. Yet many people swallow it hook, line & sinker. It is no wonder Barack Obama's campaign has hit a brick wall.

This whole Jeremiah Wright thing has been a tremendous distraction. I wonder if the real truth is that Obama, while officially a member, is not a regular congregant. Many churches have "Cheaster" members. That would explain a lot.

Fuse, I think Obama is more of a regular member that a Cheaster member. (By the way, I've never heard that term. I like it.) It was his hearing Wright's sermons (presumably the more religious ones) that brought Obama into an active Christianity. I think it safe to say that, while he lived in Chicago, he attended fairly regularly. That of course does not necessarily mean he didn't miss any Sundays, and I'm sure he has missed many since moving to Washington.

I don't think it has done much damage in the primaries, but I'm sure it will haunt him in the general election. I hope we're above that - but are we Confused ?????

Just heard yesterday on CNN the comments by Maccain (later corrected by Lieberman) about :

___________________________

Yesterday, after Sen. John McCain embarrassed himself by falsely claiming on multiple occasions that Iranian operatives are “taking al-Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back,” right-wing bloggers argued that “he shouldn’t have taken his statement back.” Abandoning his “straight talk” and trying to please everyone, McCain made a variation of the claim in his statement on the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war today:

Al Qaeda and Shia extremists — with support from external powers such as Iran — are on the run but not defeated.

____________________________

So much for his experience.... This proberbly should have come in the dumbest statement of the week.

Typical right wing conservative attitude. Shout your lungs out that you know every thing. What ever comes in your head, is the ultimate truth. After all its proberbly the holy spirit that is putting such ideas in their head.

There really is no issue as far as Obama and what his minister said and for some reason is getting all the attention in the media.

Maccain claims his foreign policy experience/knowledge to be his major strong point...! Really.

The other 2 candidates have not used the above to attack Maccain.

I think kathaksung is proberbly right. This is all a big drama.

Is he already the presumptive nominee?

My assumption, which seems to be supported by polling data, is that Hillary Clinton will be the primary beneficiary until the DP has a nominee. Don't think that this is not weighing heavy with the superdelegates right now.

'...My point is that his angry claims that his nation has betrayed its promises of racial equality and a just foreign policy are part of a long and honorable prophetic tradition. It was not critics like Wright who got us into the bloody mess we're in today. That honor belongs to the flag-wavers, the patriots -- "the real Americans."' Jeremiah Wright isn't the problem

The article just linked to misses the fact that Wright was quoting a US official when he spoke of chickens coming home to roost. But it is correct that the situation the US finds itself in today results largely from the positions and actions of the so-called patriots who look into the mirror with rose-colored glasses.
