I have been watching a story about the U.S.S. New York on the FOX Report.

I think a terrorist ship needs to be the first to challenge her on the high seas. They should let some of them come aboard to an 800 Marine welcome!

It was certainly big news around here Fuse. I had a question in my original post but removed it after posting it. I check several web sites and all the local New York news sites were running the story as the lead item.

The national sites, well except for FOX it was non existent on their web page, no less not the lead story. No mention on CNN, MSNBC, or even The New York Times at all for a while. They then put up a story about it but far from the lead story of the hour. I was going to ask “why?” but figured I already knew the answer. Roll Eyes

Apparently the ship’s motto does not hold true to many people. I won’t forget and neither will many of my friends. This is the U.S.S. New York’s crest, it means a lot to me. The silhouette of the Twin Towers along with “Never Forget” is a very appropriate crest.

I will be going today to see her and I am very excited to do so. I will pick my bride up from Midtown for lunch and we will go and tour her.

U.S.S. New York website

A very good friend of mine took these photos yesterday from his office in Lower Manhattan. He served in (retired from) the US Navy and is currently working as a construction manager in New York City.

The ones showing the U.S.S. New York through the gaping hole where the Twin Towers once stood moved him and myself. We talked about it for almost 1/2 an hour on the phone last night. Take a look if you want.

Welcome home

Passing the hole

A sight that should have never been seen

still going

Coming up to "Ground Zero"

Ellis Island in the background

Again, Ellis Island

Steaming up river

Going north past Ground Zero

I saw it on NBC's broadcast, and it ran on CNN's site. It may have been on the CBS broadcast, but I only caught a partial sentence at the end, and can't say with certainty that the ship mentioned was the New York.

That is because those networks and web sites had it as a third - fourth tier story DG. I had to search for it to find it on CNN's site. Personally I thought the story should have been "front or landing page news" all day, but I know I am at the other end of the extreme on this.

Anyways we went and toured her yesterday, it was a beautiful seasonable sunny autumn day. WOW! what a ship! She is sleek and has all the modern amenities a Sailor or Marine could ask for. Many technological upgrades compared to the class of ship I am accustomed to seeing.

Out of all the "new" things I saw the most striking to me was the sit-up Berth. Being able to sit up in a rack was unheard of to me. Not to mention the portable reading / writing surface. There is also much more storage space for the Sailors and Marines.

The bow stem (part of bow that is mostly underneath the waterline that slices through the water) is made from 7.5 tons of steel from the Twin Towers. While 7.5 tons is a minuscule amount in a ship this size (24,900 tons) the symbolism is massive.

The U.S.S. New York's motto: "Strength forged through sacrifice - Never Forget"
