Libya is trying to get its tourism industry jump-started. However, you can't buy a drink at any of the hotels. In fact, the consumption of alcohol is illegal in the country. How long will this prohibition last? Will Libya be able to really get tourists to flock to her beaches with that ban? One of Gadhafi's sons is trying to promote tourism, and the US seems to be backing his efforts. Will it all work?

A good friend was among the first US tourists there, having gone to view a recent eclipse. They had their eyes up as opposed to "bottoms up," so the other issues weren't important. He liked it. I guess if enough flights leave there without blowing up, it might work...

Depends how much they need the foreign currency and how serious they are about western tourism. Saudi Arabia is not noted for western tourism, certainly doesn't need that money; they get more than enough muslim tourism as it is; and is very strict about alcohol Smile Indonesia, on the other hand, declared a problem when Bali couldn't get enough alcohol for the tourists Roll Eyes.Drink is freely available to tourists.

A strange by-product of an alcohol ban was the best deal in first class air travel. It was with Kuwait Airways. That was perfect for non-drinkers. No western executive wanted to fly e.g London-New York without alcohol, so a large percentage of the regular first class and business clientele was lost to the airline. The airline got its fuel cheaply and saw no reason to charge executive expense account or film star prices to match its rivals'.The result was very good for teetotallers who liked luxury.Unfortunately the airline edged the prices up from absurdly low to low but they remain excellent value.
