Barack Obama's Seal

I think a lot of things the Obama campaign has done are innovative and fresh. However, I find his "presidential" seal a bit on the tacky side. Am I alone?

Looks fine to me, Fuse. What's tacky about it in your opinion?

The only irony I detect is that the eagle is looking toward the right.

I guess on second thoughts, the eagle looks a bit like roadkill.

But so is Obama, he's saying, " My eagle and I are watching you." ...or is it my eagle and me? Smile

Having an Internet address on something as archaic as a seal looks a bit odd. Is the "www." necessary - why not just "barackobama.com"?

'Vero possumes' is funny.

With you there ! Smile It's 'vero possumus', 'assuredly we can', but most of us think of a marsupial when we read 'possum' ( = 'I can') Big Grin 'Possum' is an Australian term of endearment, much used by Dame Edna Everage [Barry Humphries] who greets her audience with 'Hello, possums!'. All we need is Obama to declare the 'gladdy' (gladiolus) the campaign flower and the picture would be almost perfect Big Grin

I have to laugh at associating "vero" with politicians.

I can't find a real clear picture of it - what is in the circle covering the eagle's breast?

Yes, that too ! Their 'defence' to your slur is that vero in classical Latin was already far removed from veritas 'truth', verus 'true' and verum 'that which is true'.It was used loosely, by everyone, both in corroborative replies 'yes, sure' and generally as we'd say 'sure'(US) or 'absolutely'(UK) in speech.

Had he put vere he'd have been talking truth. 'Vere' literally means 'truly, according to truth'' .Who knows but his classicist may have been extra careful?

The seal's design is fine. I just think having one that mimic's the Presidential seal, as a candidate, is a little tacky. I may be alone in my perception. Of course, he could be giving it a whirl to see if it works for him as a marketing and fundraising tool.

It's noticeable that, in the picture in the OP, the seal is way bigger than Obama himself. He also has a background of three US flags.

Behind it, there's maybe some sophisticated strategy of making him look 'presidential' to those hesitant about voting for anyone other than an old white guy. Or maybe it's just over-reaction to flagpingate.

This is now a moot issue. Obama has apparently discontinued using the seal.
