What's this we hear about the Senate passing a bill stating that English is the official language of the USA ? Is this just a bit of political whimsy or is it meant to be a serious declaration on a serious matter ? Why would such a law ever be necessary?
In Britain we take English use as a fait accompli ********************************************************************************** 05-19-06, 04:57 PM newnickname Does this mean US citizens will have to stop saying things like "I gadda jahb" to mean "I got a job"? Smile

Yes . (I hate all that stuff in Austrian German) ********************************************************************************** 05-19-06, 06:02 PM methos It's somewhat serious, largely symbolic. Many government services and documents in the US are provided in multiple languages. The Senate's vote explicively says that this is not a right. At the same time, it does nothing to stop documents and services presently available in other languages from continuing to be available in those forms.
Some have called for English to become the official language, which would mean that all government business be done in English.
Strangley, the Senate also passed a bill calling English a "common and unifying language." There was disagreement about whether that statement was compatible with English being the national language. ********************************************************************************** 05-19-06, 06:55 PM frankvan English as the official language of the U.S.A, ranks right up there with the constitutional amendments defining marrriage as between one man and one woman, banning flag burning, putting prayer back in the public schools, etc. Is it coincidental that these things always seem to be thrown into the mix when election campaigns loom? Could it be that they rally voters behind their favorite single prejudices and divert attention from health care, the mess in Iraq and Afghanistan? To further divide liberals from conservatives. To further fog over people's idea of what it is that they should be voting on.
It is so that liberals have to say why they are opposed to making stupid laws... so that they can then say that liberals don't love America. Those flag burning, Mexican loving, baby-killing liberals are definitely not the people I want to vote for. ********************************************************************************** 05-19-06, 10:11 PM Rakuchild In much agreement with Frank and Ami. This is another non-issue to waste time with and collect their paychecks.
Found this link helpful for expressing my disgust with all the non-issues-

It's audio, so I imagine there will be some reluctance, particularly for low-bandwidth members to click through... so I'll highlight a few interesting points.
Immigrants to the US today adapt to English faster than in past waves (German, Poles, and Italians, for example) not by just years but by generations.
Polls of immigrants show that they agree that English is necessary to succeed (90%).
There are long waiting lists to get into English classes - as much as tens of thousands in a state.
Immigrants adopt English faster here than they do the local language in Germany, France, or Spain. ********************************************************************************** 06-02-06, 12:16 PM DvdGStwrt Bah, hogwash. Everybody knows that 'American' is Navaho or some other Indian (not with dot but with feathers) language.
This is just yet another political "Watch this show while we kill off more troops, while we start another war, while we increase the national debt another trillion or so" game.
I hate politicians - they are all so slimy.
In local News, Arnold “ ‘The Terminator’ Schwartz-an-immigrant-American” is sending more Californian National Guard troops to the boarder “reluctantly” supporting the Empire, er, I mean Federals.
I asked my partner “So we are going to war with Mexico now?”
“Why not we are trying to make war with everyone else.”
