Ok, If anyone was wandering I want a gerbil instead of a hamster. Anyway, Are their different types? And which is the best one to start with? But I really would like to know will My Gerbils be ok if their is alot of space or would prefer a smaller cage. If anyone could help. Please Do! Thanks
There are different types of gerbils, yes. The most common are the Mongolian gerbil (the one you usually see in photos) and the Cheeseman's gerbil (beautiful big eyes)
On your other question- an aquarium is best for gerbils as you can put lots of bedding in there for them to make their own tunnels in. But a hamster type cage is ok, as long as it has a deep bottom so you can put at least 4 inches of bedding in there. Also, gerbils like to chew the cage bars, which can be noisy- something to keep in mind if the cage will be near your bed/ study area; an aquarium would be quieter.
Silja's given you some great websites, but I would also recommend just going directly to the pet store to see what is actually available. You don't want to spend too much time and effort researching something that's only going to live a few years anyway. Just go and see what they have. They will also be able to tell you what kinds of supplies to buy, and probably have everything right there. They may even have pamphlets or books in the store.
