When we feed my daughters hamster he takes all the food and puts it in his sleeping area, underneath all the bedding,he also defacates there,is this normal? My son also has a hamster and it has never done this. Viv [uk]
We've had several hamsters and I can't honestly say I've ever seen one do that. Something I would like to pass on to you that has nothing to do with this is that if you notice your hamsters are not eating. Bring them to a vet and have them check his teeth. We had one hamster that just out of the blue stopped eating one day. After about two days I was worried and didn't know what to do so I brought him to a vet. At first everyone laughed at me, but when the vet found that the hamsters bottom teeth had actually grown so long that they covered his top teeth making it impossible for him to open his mouth on his own no one thought it was funny anymore. The vet was able to clip the teeth and the hamster was fine after that. So please watch their teeth.
This is pretty common in Hamsters actually. Mine did it. See hamsters actually eat their poop. They do it all the time. Trace minerals or something. Go figure. He puts the food where he thinks it will be safe, and if he feels that's under his bed then that's where he'll put it. See, hamsters are very greedy little rodents.

Thanks for your help,my daughter will be relieved she hasn't got a freak hamster. The explanation of hamsters putting the food under the bed for safety rings true as it reminds me of my granny putting her life savings under the mattress!
