From where did the mythical creatures we all know about come from? Did they just suddenly appear in literature, were they based in folklore, or possibly some were partially fact based?

I'm thinking of dragons (the flying & flame-spewing kind), Unicorns & leprechauns mostly.

I seem to recall that Pegasus comes to us from Greek Mythology, as do Centaurs and the like.

Any ideas or opinions?

This site has a very clever answer that I have never heard before. It seems to make a lot of sense (unless you hate losing the romantic notion that dragons were real).

This site has a long and terrific discussion on unicorns and why they were associated with virgins.

"350BC:
Celtic tribes cross to Ireland and settle there, displacing earlier inhabitants. It is thought that the Celtic tribes begin the "leprechaun myth" at this time, feeling guilty about taking over Ireland from the original inhabitants. These original inhabitants were given mystical powers and were believed to hide behind the elaborate grave sites they had built. The Irish storytelling legacy began. Even at this early stage of their development, the Irish were intoxicated by the power of words."

Thanks! These two sites were great! Of course, I'm a romantic who would like to think that dragons & unicorns existed, even though I know they didn't.

They sure make good reading though!
