28 ... oops, as of today, now it's 30 ... Chicago public school children have been murdered this year.

I just watched the story of this latest shooting in Chicago on CNN. I thought it was terribly sad that this boy, with so much potential, lost his life.

"One of the young victims was 16-year-old Blair Holt. He was an honor student. He had dreams of making it big in the music business. And he was shot to death by reputed gang member who boarded a bus and opened fire. Students say Holt was protecting another student when he was shot."

I have looked at a number of accounts of this shooting, and have not seen any link between the shooting and the school, other than the age of this victim. All accounts say he was on a Chicago Transit Authority bus. Is that a school bus? (I know that there are at least 2 companies that handle Chicago's public schools bus routes.) Aren't all (or most) teen victims school age? That doesn't make the issue a school-related one. Even if the shooter was from the same school, isn't that likely in a neighborhood?

I am not making light of the shooting, nor of the fact that about 30 school-age children in Chicago have been killed this year. I am just pointing out that calling it a school shooting is not yet warranted by the known facts.

Perhaps my thread title is misleading. I wasn't creative enough to come up with something other than what CNN was using as the backdrop for Anderson Cooper's report last night.

I just wanted to place the setting right, Fuse. Within the last year or so, there was a thread in AP in which school shootings were discussed. When a bit of research was done, it showed that schools shootings are not increasing nearly as much as the media portrays, nor as much as people seem to think.
