Remember this as a kid? Our teachers grilled us about the "SHWA" all the time. Thing is, I have no clue whatsoever now what they were talking about. Was it an annunciation thing? Or a spelling thing? Or a grammatical thing? What was the "SHWA" ? Help help.

Great name for a band, eh? "Cleveland, please welcome......The SHWA Sound !!!!!!"

The schwa is a mid-central vowel. It has developed in English as the sound for all vowels found in unstressed syllables, regardless of the orthographic symbol used.

How I remember them well! It's a pronounciation thing as well as a symbol. Monster gives a good link...although I question a few of the examples shown.
