I live in a small town in Michigan. Recently my daughter was sexually assulted at her school while in the library. She and 2 other students reported this to the person in charge of disapline at the time. He no longer is employed at the shcool. I was not called and did not get a letter home. When I did find out I went to the Superintendent and told him what I knew at that time. He assured me he would look into it right away..that was a month ago. I have since filed charges with the police on this. When I try to contact the school they tell me in a round about way that the boy who did this to my daughter has more rights than she has and they can not give me any information. They are both 12 yrs old. This boy was also suspended right before x-mas for doing this to another girl. The school tells me that the problem lies in that the boy is "special needs" Well his parents have rode this boat with him and used it as an excuse for years. I think thier boat just ran ashore. I will not tolerate this and I do not think my daughter should have to go to school and look over her shoulder all of the time. The boy is in a regular class room with the general population and is "supposed" to be escorted to and from everywhere he goes which he is not.The boy also maintains an A & B grade average which makes me believe that he maintains information. I have told my daughter that if he comes near her or touches her to scream and kick,,,hit or whatever then report it to the office. I am prepared to hire a Lawyer if needed but I would like to avoid that. I found out today that the boy was in what they call in-school suspension for spitting in another girls face..nice boy eh? Any suggestions on how to get this kid out of our public school system? Confused

And what did they do? You should not interfere in the case if they have taken appropriate action.

If not, you will find a lot of "CYA" and will likely need an attorney to get any sort of resolution.

The last thing the school board wants is media attention. I would inform the superintendant that you WILL be talking to the local news if something isn't done. They don't want to see the Channel 2 problem solvers on their doorstep.

Remember that everyone has a boss. If you aren't getting satisfaction through the school district, there are other avenues.

I think you should get some advice from some crisis hotlines.

Michigan Assault Hotline
1-800-NO-MEANS-NO

Michigan Parent Help Hotline
1-800-942-4357

Rape Abuse Incest National Network
1-800-656-HOPE

School Violence Hotline
1-800-815-TIPS

Listening Ear Crisis Hotline
1-800-231-1127

I believe there is a Michigan anti bullying policy. See here

You can also file sexual harrassment charges.

You can get a police restraining order.

You can contact the Michigan State Police.

Contact your state representative here.

Someone at one of the numbers above should be able to assist you. If you don't get any assistance, contact your local news station. This behavior shouldn't be tolerated. I also suggest that you get your daughter into counceling. She needs to talk with someone.
