All of the housing on our base is infested with silverfish! Disgusting little critters. They aren't really harmful, just gross, but what I'm really concerned about is that we are moving next December (to God knows where) and I do NOT want to take this little pests with us!

I can't use poison or moth balls, because I have two small children, and the most infested rooms are the livingroom and toyroom. I've also tried the backwards-tape-on-a-glass-of-water trick--no dice. I also vacuum both rooms (the whole downstairs, actually) thoroughly, every day, including the baseboards, and that's slowing them down but not getting rid of them.

We have as much paper/cardboard/soft stuff protected from them as possible--my son's toys are all stored in closed Rubbermaids, as is everything we have in storage in the closets and storage room. Unfortunately, I assume they are in the couch and probably inside the pressed-fiberboard tv stand and such. We cannot dispose of and replace these items when we move.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for killing the nasty little buggers? I seriously don't want to take these with us when we move!

Thanks!

I've only seen them a couple of times in my parents basement (man, those critters can move fast!!) - but in doing a quick search, found THIS. Looks interesting - a bit out of the norm for bug elimination, but could work!!

Mommy - it worked when I clicked on it, so I'm not sure what to change...

Here is the section that spoke of "Getting Rid of Silverfish"

"Here's a problem we've all had to deal with at some stage - silverfish. Give this remedy a try.

Mix together equal portions of borax, flour and sugar. Place the mixture in bottle tops or on small pieces of paper.

Place it in corners, drawers and shelves.

Vacuuming regularly, and wiping shelves liberally with a potent lavender oil will also deter them for up to twelve months."

Ah! Now that makes good sense--they'll go to eat the flour and sugar, and injest the borax too.

Thank you so much--I'll go get some borax Smile

I will! I still haven't found Borax anywhere, but as soon as I do I'll try it out!

I have also heard that they dislike the
smell of cloves, and that a few whole
cloves in the places they are seen most
can make them leave.
Before putting down borax, be sure to
vacuum thoroughly around any areas with
dampness (under the kitchen / bathroom
sinks) because silverfish love moist places.
