Is Febreeze the best way to get smoke smell out of the air and furniture, or are other methods equal to or better than spraying the crap out of anything and everything in a house?

Is this a one-time erratication? Or are you dealing with ongoing smoke? If dealing with ongoing, then in the short term, get a candle that neutralizes smoke (I get these at my local smoke shop)...but for the long term:

If you have a piece of furniture that is permeated with smoke, and you don't smoke now or ever, you will probably NEVER be able to get the smell out to your satisfaction.

Febreeze is ok for covering up the smell. Your best bet might be to get Stanley Steemer there and steam clean your furniture and carpeting.

Oh...and if your home was previously occupied by a heavy smoker, it's IN your walls. Apply two coats of primer and paint, and it may help.

If you can spend a day or two out of the house, there is a machine that can kill all carbon-based odors. You'd have to try to rent one from the companies that clean houses after fires, and they are expensive, but they work. I had smoke damage in every room in my house, and 2 or 3 of those did the job. You just plug them in and leave. It removes the oxygen from the air, and kills odors. When you go back in, you have to open some doors first to allow good air back into the house.

Well, this is a house we might be staying in for a long weekend, so I figured I would just bring some Febreeze and spray the crap out of everything. I'll have to look for those candles, giz, thanks.
It's not something I would be willing to spend a lot of money on, since it's not my house, but I don't want to have to deal with the odor while we're there.

Thanks!

I'm really leery about Febreze and the like. You're just adding another chemical to your atmosphere. I'm specially leery about products that claim to be good at 'eliminating' all odors. Chemically very unlikely. Probably works by zapping your receptors. There was a product that did that on the market years ago, called Nilodor. Its sales dropped way down when people found out how it worked. Just a good wash-down with soap and water is probably best. (I typed 'soup and water' but then caught it and corrected myself. Soup and water probably wouldn't work. Depends on the soup, though.)

Well, since it's not my house I don't plan to wash anything with soup or soap. Wink If it works by zapping my receptors, I'm really okay with that. I just want to be comfortable while I'm there. Smile
