I have a Krups coffee pot.(about a year old) Its starting to make the coffee bitter. What is the best way to clean it? I have tried the coffee cleaner packs but they don't work that well. (I think it was the blue Mr. Coffee kind) ***************************************************************** 07-10-02, 03:33 PM Georgia85 Brew white vinegar through it and follow with several "brewings" of regular water. It will take about 4 cycles to get the vinegar odor out of it but afterwards your coffee pot will be clean and you will notice a vast improvement.
07-11-02, 04:21 AM clarebear How much vinegar do I use? Do I use 10 cups all vinegar or do I mix some water with it?

For the first brewing cycle you use straight vinegar. Then pour it out and follow it up with several flushings of brewed water.
07-11-02, 07:32 AM puppyblues Is that a glass one? If so, I always clean mine with some ice and salt. Shake around a little and it cleans it really good.
07-11-02, 09:09 AM clarebear Thank you so much Georgia! I'll try that this week.
PuppyBlues: I do have a glass decanter but I was looking to clean the actual maker. The glass pot is easy to clean. I think I have a lot of deposits in the maker that I need to clean out. My coffee just tastes bitter lately.
07-12-02, 01:47 AM nursey63 My coffee pot says to put only about 6 cups of white vinegar in it, it is a 12 cup maker and run it so that about one half comes out and turn the pot off for a hour and then back on to finish and then put straight water through 4 or 5 times to get rid of the vinegar. Put a filter in if it takes one. wink
07-13-02, 02:10 PM gizmogram We have very hard water where we are...vinegar didn't seem to do the job, so I put some CLR through the coffee maker.
CLR is available at most stores. I poured CLR into the pot to the 2 cup mark, and then filled the rest with water. Ran it through the machine (man, I couldn't believe the gunk that came out!), and then ran 3-4 straight water cycles to clean it out.
It worked wonders! We make alot of coffee at our house, so I usually do the vinegar thing once every two weeks and then the CLR about every 6 weeks.
07-16-02, 05:15 PM clarebear Georgia and Nursey: I just wanted you to know I tried the Vinegar and it worked great. I was kinda confused about how much to use 10 cups or 6 cups so I just use 8 cups LOL!
Giz: I'll go out and get that CLR for the upkeep in between my vinegar cleaning.
Puppy: (I can't leave out the puppy) Thanks for the tip on the ice and salt. Woof!
You all are soooooooo smart! Now I can have a good cup of coffee again. Thank You.
big grin

You're such a compromiser! So glad it worked for you...knew it would! And bet your first cup of coffee didn't even taste like vinegar!
07-17-02, 05:48 PM clarebear Nope! Didn't taste like vinegar at all. (Have I been the only one that has to keep fixing the way I spell vinager... I mean vinegar. (I've had to do that every time I've typed it) LOL!
Thanks Georgia. smile
07-18-02, 08:10 AM Walks On Water Clare, if there is one thing I miss from Jeeves, it would be the spellchecker. I too have a spelling and typing problem.
I just think of it as Vine Gar and not vinagar as I would say it. I also say warsh (from KY) and not wash. Thank God I don,t spell IT that way.
07-18-02, 05:00 PM cattywampus This will probably get kicked off as it's not on the topic, but I say "worsh" and my mother was always telling us kids to "redd" off the table. Pennsylvania Dutch. wink

I don't know anything about cleaning a coffee pot (until now, that is) but I do know about "Spell Checking".
There is a great free download for a spell checker program that installs right into Internet Explorer.
I have downloaded and installed this spell checker and find that it works great. When installed, it is in the "Tools" menu. You can also click the View menu, then "Toolbars" and then "Customize" and add it to the Toolbar.
When you're finished typing and ready to click "Post Now", click the ieSpell tool and your post is spell checked.
And enjoy the coffee!
07-24-02, 01:22 PM clarebear Thank you so much Dwight!!!!! I works great. I just right click my mouse and its right there. Now I just gotta remember to use it. smile
07-31-02, 10:41 PM Texan-In-Exile You could also try ½ pot water and 1 or 2 tablespoons each of vinegar and baking soda. At least, according to the baking soda box.
08-01-02, 01:06 PM Walks On Water Have you ever tried to mix vinegar, water and add baking soda. If you haven't then you in for a real treat.
Vinegar is an acid- baking soda is an anti-acid ( sodium bicarbonate). While it won't hurt anything, depending on how you mix it, it could get exciting.
The baking soda will neutralize the acid in the vinegar and it is the acid effect that you need to dissolve the mineral build up in your coffee maker.
