I have all black appliances in my kitchen. My biggest hassle is how to keep my stovetop clean. I seem to have streaks all the time. I have tried vinager and water and doesn't work as well as I had hoped. Does anyone know of any product on the market that works well on black appliances?
Thank you for your time ******************************************************* 11-18-03, 10:30 PM Sherasi Is your stove top black glass?
(BTW, welcome to the POOL! Big GrinBig Grin) 11-18-03, 10:31 PM aprilfoolone No it is just black like the rest of it.
11-18-03, 10:54 PM Sherasi Clean your stove as you do normally. Then, get a glass and surface cleaner and clean the top with a newspaper. The newspaper makes a clean streakless surface.
11-19-03, 03:05 AM aprilfoolone I've used newspaper for windows, but I never thought of using it for the stove. I will try it out.
Thanks allot!!! Smile Smile
11-19-03, 07:47 AM Sherasi Let us know how it works!
11-19-03, 09:03 AM Georgia85 Sher...you and your newspapers.... I never understood how applying a newspaper, that doesn't absorb moisture, and is full of news ink, to a wet surface, could ever work.... Will ya come over here and show me how you do it? Wink
And April, my stove has a black top and I use Windex with Vinegar and never have had a problem with streaks. Actually I've used all different formulas of Windex and have never had streaks. I also use Sparkle paper towels which in my opinion are the best brand to use to get a streak free surface.
11-19-03, 11:07 AM aprilfoolone Sherasi,
Well I cleaned the whole stove this morning using vinager and water and then I re-wet it and went over it again with a newspaper. It actually worked pretty good except for all the ink left on my hands and nails. But I have to admit my stove looks pretty good.
Georgia, I will look for Windex with vinager and the sparkle paper towels and try that too. The paper towels I am using leave streaks and allot of fibers and I am using regular windex. I think the key is getting any grease off that might be left. That is what makes the streaks. So if you can cut the grease,it should be easier. Thanks a bunch ladies for your help. I really appriciate it!! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
11-19-03, 12:24 PM Georgia85 Sometimes those ultra absorbent paper towels do leave fibers. I think you will like Sparkle.
And news ink on your fingertips? Priceless! I rest my case Wink
11-19-03, 01:06 PM Sherasi Georgia: I have no idea why it works, but it does. My parents used to live in a home with huge windows. The newspaper was the only way to make them gleam. However, I DON'T DO WINDOwS (anymore! Eek)
April: You can get a box of inexpensive disposable plastic gloves from any medical supply center.. just wear them when you use the newsprint and discard the whole pile when you are done! Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin (I forgot to tell you about that! Eek)
11-19-03, 01:22 PM Georgia85 Sher, I'm razzing you. My last bf swore up and down that newspapers were the way to go. Of course he also said that nothing cleaned the road grease off of windshields better than a can of coke poured over it. But there are some things I just don't have the guts to try Wink
Oh, and you can also buy a whole bag of plastic gloves at a dollar store Big Grin
02-11-04, 09:40 PM Amber-Marie HI ALL After reading all the responses, did the stove eventually get clean? I have the same problem, and nothing I've tried works! I use newspaper and annomia to do my spring cleaning of the windows, and nothing beats that, but the "grease streaks" left on your stove are another thing. As for a can of coke, if I have any left over, I just throw it in the toilet, and let it "sit", and its' supposed to 'clean it'. I've also heard to toss a penny in there too with it! figure that one out! ?! I have never heard of "sparkle" paper towels. I've found, an old diaper is the best for cleaning ( if you can still find them!) This site is so cool! Everytime I post something, I get such a nice "welcome" response!
02-11-04, 10:26 PM Nadca2 Money down the drain. And here I thought it was a figure of speech. Razz I have one of the smooth tops and windex works the best. I clean as normal and then go over with windex. Clean no streaks. The windex with vinegar smells good too. Should work for a regular stove as well.
02-14-04, 12:28 PM aprilfoolone Amber-Marie,
Thanks for responding. One peson suggested using windex with vinegar. It does seem to work better then just windex, or just vinegar. But I what I have found is that you have to spray in on and let it sit for a few min. then I go over the stove with one of those "scottie sponges" the ones that are yellow on the sponge side and has the green scatchy side too. I use the scratchy side on the stove first, then I respray and then use the paper towel. The trick is too get all the grease off first. If not that is what leaves the streaks. Newspaper does work too, but I don't like all the black ink on my hands afterwards. I feel that if it is on my hands it's on the stove too.
The coke in the toilet I have never heard of, but they use to clean acid off of car batteries, so I guess it would work.
Thanks again, Aprilfool
11-08-05, 10:49 AM TwoSweetMomma I just asked my Mom this morning what to do about my streaky black stove. I tried a generic glass cleaner, after reading this string, but it didn't work. I'm stopping today to pick up some windex w/vinegar.
I, too, have used newspaper before. Actually, I worked at McDonald's while in college. To clean the mirror above the french fry vats, we'd use glass cleaner with brown paper towels. Worked miracles!

I have been fighting with a black stove top for months now and I have tried everything under the sun to clean it. It never dawned to me to use newspaper instead of a cloth or paper towel. I use newspaper to clean my windows, so why didn't I ever think of using it to avoid the fricking streaks on my black stop top??? Now I am loving my black stove once again. Thank you Sherasi for all your help.
