Lately I am having a problem getting our towels to smell fresh.

We use them often (clean towel is a must)--
I wash clothes every other day.
Lately the towels do not smell fresh when they come of of the dryer. I have tried different soap and dryer sheets. I am also drying the towels all the way. However, if not right away, then within 2 or 3 days (when it is to be used) it has this mildewish stinch. Our clothes are not doing this...any ideas?

Add a quarter cup of white or apple cider vinegar to your water along with your regular detergent when washing towels. Set at the warmest water temperature safe for your laundry and wash. You may want to rinse a second time, but if you use a liquid fabric softener you won't smell the vinegar, only clean towels!

Try using "GAIN" detergent. It makes all of our clothes smell so good. You might also try "DOWNY" inhancer liquid. My towels smell good after 3 weeks of being stored in the linen closet.

If you are using Gain already, you may need to get your plumbing checked. Is your sink drain on the same drain as your washing machine? There could be some other plumbing that is backing up into your system. It could also be some bad pipes or some partial blockages that could be making back flow or something.

I never would have thought to put vinegar into the wash water to freshen towels. I often have the same problem, and will definitely try this next time I wash! cool Thanks!

Gee Dawg - You're gonna make somebody a good wife! Haha!
(Thanks for the tip!)

Another thought - you could try adding ¼ - ½ cup of bleach to the laundry.
As long as you don't overdo it, the bleach shouldn't affect the color.

Instead of dryer sheets try using the liquid fabric softner. We use Snuggle. There are several different scents and one should be to your liking. We use liquid Tide Free (unscented) so as to ensure it gets mixed well and doesn't leave any soap residue - or artificial aroma.

Ruthann, Dogspit is correct.
I have on occasion, forgotten wet clothes in the washing machine. They get that terrible mildew smell.
Even after washing them again they still have a slight smell. My aunt told me about the vinegar. I usually a half cup(white vinegar) in my rinse cycle. I use dryer sheets and I can never smell the vinegar.
Good luck!
