I have a friend who is allergic to milk. (severe sinus reaction) Is there a subsitute for sour cream? He tried making chip dip from soy, tofu and an onion soup mix but it came out terrible. He wants something that is as close as possible. Any suggestions?

They do make dairy-free sour cream, but you'd likely have to go to an organic/specialty market for that. I have friends who are vegetarians and make their own sour cream (well, it's LIKE sour cream). It's made with tofu, but it really doesn't taste too bad! I think it'd be different if you make the "sour cream" out of the tofu first, then make your dip then it would be to just use soft tofu.

1 lb soft tofu
1/4 cup of oil (sunflower, olive, whatever your preference)
1 1/2 tbl lemon juice
1 1/2 tbl vinegar (whatever your preference)
1 tbl soy sauce
1 tsp honey

Blend all of the above in a food processor or a blender...takes a while to get it all blended very smoothly together.

Then proceed with whatever dip recipe you want by replacing the sour cream with this. Once you get the consistency you want - the flavor really is in the spices that you mix in.
