Fifteen to twenty years ago, Placido Domingo began to record annual concerts in Vienna, broadcast just a few days before Christmas. He always invited a couple of guests, I remember, not always from the classical world, but it all so often worked to perfection. Dionne Warwick and Patricia Kaas were two examples. The repertoire was always traditional "Christmas" in kind, and 1994 was a highlight, for this was the year he invited Sissel Kyrkjebö, my magical Norwegian heroine. And then some years after this, he stopped. Does anyone remember these concerts, and does anyone know why he abandoned such a wonderfully successful idea?
