Bon Jovi is such a talented band and they definitely proved it with their latest CD "Have A Nice Day," which my friend was able to get me a copy of at Umvd. What do you guys think of Bon Jovi? Its a really good cd with some catchy songs. Check them out: http://www.islandrecords.com/www2/ecard/bonjovi/bonjovi...eaniceday/index.html

I heard Have a Nice Day back when it came out. It's not horrible, but from what I've heard, I've been noticing quite a bit of cheesiness in their songs since the comeback that. Have a Nice Day has it as much as It's My Life did, right down to the exasperations of freedom to live. Don't know if you know what I mean. 80's Bon Jovi is definitely classic stuff though. Definitely their strongest moments there. What do you say?

I'm not much of a Bon Jovi fan but 'Have A Nice Day' sounds really good.

Big Grin I like those positive-themed songs (It's My Life, Keep the Faith). '80s hair-bands were/are always good at the anthem-type songs and the touching power ballads. Big Grin

I think Bon Jovi has put out good stuff over the years...maybe it's not earth-shattering in significance, but it's enjoyable for me to listen to (and to watch as videos, one of their strong suits). And they've attempted to stay viable as musicians by putting out new material over the past 15 years rather than living in the past, off their '80s hits. I think I will go see them when they play in Fresno next March! Smile

Jusork, what is your overall opinion of the whole '80s music scene? The "new wave" and "hair metal" bands...do they all seem cheesy to you? I know you like Depeche Mode, though. Smile Who do you think were the best from that time?

Something becomes so anthematic that it's just cheesy. I tried Keep the Faith though and it doesn't sound like that at all. Something must've happened since It's My Life. It's My Life and Have a Nice Day sound more like standard and dry versions that try to be Keep the Faith. Bad nostalgia for the 80s, although I guess it works (do you think it's nostalgic?).

Cheesiness isn't necessarily unlistenable though. The artist just has to balance it out with some good cheesy songwriting. And let me tell you, I can definitely be a fan of some of those overcheesy songs (The Final Countdown by Europe is my favorite hair metal song) and they pop up for me in all kinds of other styles too (if you think Final Countdown was cheesy than what'll you think when you say I like Tarzan Boy by Baltimora!).

Good enjoyment certainly comes in many forms. I listen to some incredably embarrassing stuff simply because it's catchy. Although I still wouldn't think very highly of it. Oh you like the videos? Do you like looking at Bon Jovi? Wink There's certainly some respect in being able to step up and releasing new stuff.

My overall opinion is that it was pretty good and a highly enjoyable decade of music (I'm a big fan of 80's R.E.M., too). Syth-pop is possibly one of my favorite musicial styles (especially because of Depeche Mode who did make some cheesy stuff; good memory about me there). Not much as really stood out for me from hair-metal. New Wave had some great stuff, too, which I doubt could be doubted. I see the 80s as having a lot of what I described above as good cheesy music. Not exclusive to cheese though. There was 80s music that didn't have any and there was some that I'd consider to just have a hint of it and managed to not overdo it, but there still definitely seemed to be plenty of it out there. I thought Talking Heads were a good band. Also, Oingo Boingo, Pixies, XTC, Violent Femmes. I guess I thought college rock was the best part of the 80s, and post-punk like The Cure, too. But that's not to say new wave and hair metal didn't have respectable moments, I just see more from college rock and post-punk.

And what do you think of non-Bon Jovi 90s music? Do you find the 90s as likable as the 80s?
