In my mind it IS Eartha Kitt that had the Definitive version,But being the pre 70s there must be many cover versions of this song.
Wouldn't be surprised if there was a Nina Simone version as well

If so then the definitive version was by Barbra Streisand who starred in the 1968 film "Funny Girl" from which the song came.Judy Garland did a version of it with her daughter Liza Minnelli,and it was also covered by Shirley Bassey,but I don't know of a version by Eartha Kitt.

Thanks for the correction.I Forgot about Shirley Bassey (Got her and Eartha Kitt names mixed up somewhere). That must have been the version I was listening to. I thought it dated from the end of the 50s?
