Any suggestions on how to make a first time 'flyer' more at ease on the plane? My niece will be taking her first flight in August and is a bit nervous. She isn't afraid of anything just nervous mostly about how it will feel. I haven't been on a plane since I was a child so I'm afraid I'm no help in this area. Thanks.

Hi, Dr. Joy answered this ? this morning on her radio show: There's a product (OTC) that will relax an anxious person with a few drops on the tongue, she says. Also, take crossword puzzles, books, and of course: GUM (for the ear popping). She also mentioned trying to reassure a nervous passenger by quoting statistics: safest method of travel etc etc. Safer than even getting to the airport. Good luck. Flying is FUN!!!

I took my granddaughter to Hawaii a few years ago. It was the first time she'd ever flown. Through the taxiing process and takeoff, she clung tightly to my hand. But once in the air, she relaxed and really enjoyed herself. Couldn't wait to do it again. Unless she insists, give her the aisle seat (looking down makes many people nervous) and concentrate on the stewardii and the other passengers. Note: This is why they serve drinks on the plane.

Just as a back up measure, take some Karvol capsules. It's just a decongestant that you normally squeeze onto your pillow when you sleep(like Olbas oil). When you feel the plane start it's descent, squirt a capsule into some hot water and inhale the fumes. I've tried many different methods to clear my ears and this seems to be the cheapest, most effective. Happy holidays!

Oh gosh yes, I forgot about that. And whatever you do, DON'T CATCH A COLD! I swam in the ship's pool on a cruise (a real no-no) and came down with the worst cold I've ever had. The pain was awful coming down and my ears were still popping two weeks later.

I fly alot and love it.All everyone suggested is great ideas. Also tell her to be prepared that the plane may get alittle bumpy at times it is just air turbulance. If she is very nervous some people like to fly at night better than the daytime. Just a suggestion. Take care.
