Why is it on the Closing bell on Wall Street there is always a large group of people on the podium and some "notable" or guest thumps the hammer to denote the market is closed?
When did this begin? And who is authorised to close the days trading if there is no one famous/important to thump the hammer? or is the closing bell OK instead?

In most cases, the people are the top executives of a company who shares began trading on the Dow that day. In others it may be notable guests visiting that day. Otherwise it is the chairman of the NYSE who does it or his representative.
