Both men and women lose hair thickness and amount as they age. However, women don't suffer from hair recession and total baldness like men do because a lot of hair loss is inherited (pattern baldness) and effects men more than women.
Not only do genes play a part on male pattern baldness but also the male hormone testosterone plays a vital role. This hormone, which is present in high levels in males after puberty, is converted into DHT (dihydrotestosterone) by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. This makes the hair follicle weak and because of the weak follicle, hair growth slows down. Sometimes the follicle will stop producing hair, causing baldness.
Women also produce the male hormone testosterone, but in much less quantity then men. However, after women reach menopause they produce more testosterone as the female hormone estrogen decreases. With this added testosterone production comes hair thinning. But again, because women produce less testosterone, their hair loss is minimal.
