In my home area, I have been noticing something. It seems that in high school sports, I have noticed especially in basketball, that high school teams are travelling a pretty good distance. Like in these "shoot-outs", we see schools from across the country. This week my son and I have been going to a holiday basketball tournament his school is participating in. There is a school from Toronto in it. The sad aspect about it is they don't have any fans from home, there to cheer them on because it is so far away. And it leads me to wonder what the benefit is to this school? If they are participating in something so far from home that their fellow students cannot even attend the games, is this really practical? +++++++++++++ 12-31-02, 03:09 AM Jelp01 A few years ago, the volleyball team from our local high school traveled to a tournament in Las Vegas, a trip of well over 1000 miles one way. Considering the size of our town (2900) and high school enrollment (265) it was a thrill for them to attend, especially after a very good showing (defeating a couple of high schools with enrollments of 1800).
As a general rule, though, I'm not sure of the benefit to traveling all over the country for tournaments. It does give high school stars exposure in other areas of the country, but for 99.9% of high school athletes who won't be getting college offers from around the country, all it does is tire them out and takes away study time. It is, after all, high school.
