I was just wondering how did religious groups that used alcahol in thier services react during the prohibition era. For example, what did jews do suring the passover seder? Did they just not use wine? Did they have any special permission? Or did they just break the law? What did catholics do for comunion?
I know that Christian religions that used wine in their services were allowerd to used the same wine during the US prohibition; I assume that Jews could do the same. Another thing to remember is that the use of alcohol was not illegal at that time; it was the sale and transportation that was illegal. As I pointed out in another thread, many private clubs simply bought as much liquor as they could when it was legal, and stored it. I am sure that membership dues went up, because it would be illegal for them to sell it, but that is something easy to get around. ("Medicinal" alcohol was also legal, and many people who could afford to simply paid a physician for a script.)
