Some Presidents of the USA have had nicknames and epithets e.g The Gipper, the Teflon President

1)What notable other ones have there been ? We remember but few here. Ike, Silent Cal and Honest Abe are the only ones that come readily to mind.

2)How, then, should George W Bush be known in posterity ? The Potemkin President suggests itself, for his enemies to use; Potemkin was a builder of facades, with nothing behind them but struts, to deceive the casual viewer passing by, who then thought that these were buildings that could stand on their own and represented progress . Or perhaps the Charlie McCarthy President ; no doubt his enemies think that if he can't even go before a commission without Cheney going in with him he is akin to the vent's dummy.

Any ideas?

Among other nicknames:

George Washington.....Father of our Country
Andrew Jackson....Old Hickory
Martin Van Buren...Martin van Ruin (one of my favorites Big Grin)
Ulysses S. Grant---Useless
Theodore Roosevelt--Teddy
Harry Truman---Give 'em Hell Harry
John Kennedy---Jack
Lyndon Johnson---LBJ
Richard Nixon---Tricky Dick

As for President Bush: hard to tell now. My gut instinct is that he won't be held in overly high regard by historians (but it could be worse---he's been far from the worst President) so any number of rather negative epithets will probably work. One that has potential was coined by our very own Honilov....Dumbya Big Grin though I think that's a bit harsh. Our President strikes me as being dumb like a fox.

"Dumb like a fox?" this is President George W. Bush we're talking about, not his father. This is the President who suddenly decided that arresting Osama bin Laden and his senior staff was unimportant. The president who insisted that we had to invade Iraq right away to remove Saddam's weapons of mass destruction. The president who announced "Mission Accomplished" about nine hundred US fatalities ago...

Personally, I think a fox in the White House would have been better.

Nixon had some other nicknames as well. I kind of liked "Slippery Dick Nixon" That's about the only one I remember suitable for a family forum...

And like Johnson, Franklin Roosevelt was (or is now) known by his initials -- FDR.

Fred, this could be the reason!

'In 1876, no presidential contender received a majority of electoral votes so the determination of the country's president was again thrown into the U.S. House of Representatives. By a one vote margin, Rutherford B. Hayes became the new U.S. president. When Tilden's party protested the tabulation and demanded a recount, Congress established a 15-member electoral commission to again count the electoral votes and declare the result. By an eight to seven margin - again, one vote -- the commission affirmed the count and gave the election and presidency to Hayes.'
