I've got a little theory that King Aurther's legend may have grown from the Germanic Prince Arminius.

Arminius--Royalty.
Aurther--Royalty.

Arminius--Became well known for his victory against the Roman Empire.
Aurther--Well known for his battles.

These are only some of the things they have in common.

I believe it is possible (and probable) that tales of Arminius were exaggerated (ie the round-table could have been tribal gatherings) and thus he became Aurther as we know today.

However, I know I do not have all the facts straight so far... could anyone shed some light on the two people? Please provide whatever resources you know of so I can learn more about them.

A starting point for Arthur is a useful summary of the 'history' and the sources on the BBC history website:

www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/arthur_01.shtml

Don't dislocate your tongue attempting to pronounce the Welsh names and words Smile For example Arthur's son Arwr is AH-roo-URR (and that's an easy one)!

Arminius, on the other hand, was very much alive and various historic battles involved him , in contrast to Arthur's supposed involvement in just one identifiable one. He is attested to by classical historians from early on. A good summary, with references, can be found on wikipedia.org ( but I can't get the page to load !)but Google produced several other good sites just for Arminius roman Smile
