In Oprah Winfrey's movie "Beloved" she plays the part of an escaped slave who settles just across the mason Dixon line. If slaves can be returned to their owners why would she jeopardize her freedom like that? When she is eventually caught and kills her child, they allow her to stay free in her home. Is the situation historically accurate, and why?

Kentucky, I believe, was a free state and it is south of the Mason-Dixon line. Certainly, Kentucky was never a part of the Confederacy.
