At what point in her history did the United States stop being wholly independent and self-sufficient in oil?

We have a history of acquiring land for oil and other riches (ie, Seward's Folly); however, we started importing oil in 1970 (http://maps.unomaha.edu/Peterson/funda/Sidebar/

Hey, guess who exports more oil to you than Kuwait ?

The United Kingdom ! Hurray! We are seventh out of the top ten exporters of oil to the USA. Ahead of us we only had, as at 2002, your two immediate neighbours of Canada and Mexico, Saudi Arabia , Venezuela, Nigeria and then (just) Iraq; I expect we are ahead of them at present of course. How's about that ?

So of course our 'gas' is dirt cheap here, as we export the crude stuff..........er......is 84 pence a litre cheap...that's $5-30c a US gallon ?

I incidentally see that the US only produces about half of her own consumption too, which is interesting
