I have a cat, Ashes, who is about two years old. He is VERY strange but my question is he likes tomatoes, strawberries, cantelope, and watermelon, but now he is also wanting to eat my oranges. Are any of these foods bad for or dangerous to cats? I know grapes aren't good for them but what about these other foods? Does any one know? TIA ************************************************************ 01-23-06, 04:52 AM mommy to four cats Oh BTW he drinks my coffee too if I let him. Did I mention he was strange Smile
01-23-06, 05:31 AM RoverRoad Cats are carnivores, but they can handle some vegetables and fruit in their diet. As long as their primary source if nutrition comes from meat.
I'm not so sure I'd want a cat on caffeine Eek. Just don't let it get too much of it. Remember, these are little critters. They could overdose on caffine pretty quickly. You don't want the little thing to have a heart attack! Maybe you should switch it to decaf. Smile
01-23-06, 05:40 AM mommy to four cats Well, at 18 pounds I would hardly call him "little" Smile But I never let him have anything in excess. When I let him have strawberries I never let him have more than a half of one. I break it up into little pieces. I do the same with tomatoes and the other stuff. As for the coffee I put a little in a spoon and let him drink it. That usually pacifies him and he stays out of the cup. Thanks for the info!
01-23-06, 05:45 AM RoverRoad Here is a website that lists foods that you should never give to your cat. I was surprised to see onions and garlic on the list.
COFFEE IS A BIG RED NO NO ON THIS LIST . "Can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous system."
01-23-06, 11:26 AM Lydia actually garlic, onions, potatoes are among those on the list NOT go give them...primarely any night shade vegetable is bad for them. For the most part, vegetables and fruits are fine for cats and dogs. They do have some difficulty digesting fruits and veggies though, so they should be VERY small. As for the caffeine...that's actually bad for cats. I'm curious if you have milk/cream in your coffee. If you do, it's likely that the cat is interested in that, not necessarily the coffee itself.
I am uncertain on the strawberries, but I would imagine if your cat had any digestive issues with the tiny seeds, you'd already know about it!!! Smile
01-23-06, 11:38 AM mommy to four cats Well he doesn't seem to have problems with anything he wants to eat. I do make sure the pieces of whatever I give him are small and that he doesn't get much. Yes I do use creamer in my coffee but it is non-dairy. I guess he does like the taste of that not really the coffee. Again I don't let him have much and he doesn't get it every day. I don't think he could be any more hyper than he already is so I am not sure if the caffine affects him or not Smile
01-23-06, 05:09 PM RoverRoad Keep in mind, the key word on the coffee is TOXIC. Just like you shouldn't give a cat little amounts of chocolate, coffee is apparently the same danger.

As RoverRoad mentions, it's not the affect of caffeine that is the issue. If it's the non-dairy creamer, why not just give him a little bit on a saucer or on your spoon? Is there really a good reason to risk the toxic nature of coffee to your cat? Can't think of any good reason to give it to him. ~Lydia
01-24-06, 12:03 PM mommy to four cats Well I am not going to let him have any more coffee no matter if it's that or the creamer. I can fix him a little creamer if he wants it. I am not going to risk it hurting him. And I just meant he is so hyper anyway that I didn't think the caffine would make him any more so. Smile
01-24-06, 01:45 PM RoverRoad I know how hard it is not to give in and give them what they want. My first cat used to eat table scraps. It became overweight and got sick. I've only given my current cat the best quality cat food and she has been much healthier. The only time she bugs me for my food is when I'm making a tuna sandwich, and I always let her drink the water from the can. 02-07-06, 12:11 AM CD Stomper best to keep animals away from meat. everything is ok. oh yeah, cats can not eat that christmas flower...holly
