As I was wondering whether cats are in some way right-pawed or left-pawed (as humans are right-handed or left-handed), I really got to wondering, because cats have four paws. My guess is that cats are likely ambidextrous, that is, likely using two front paws without distinction. Do you have any information on the "paw orientation" of cats or whether they are likely ambidextrous? Humor will be tolerated, of course.

Just from living with cats for several years, I would say that they do favor their right or their left paws. My family has a Siamese cat that does practically everything with her left paw and my Isabel loves to climb into cabinets and open doors to mischief using her right paw.

I have no scientific evidence to back me up but I would say that cats, like people, are lefties or righties. :-)

Here's a little test you can do to see if your cat is right or left "pawed"...

Which Paw???

Yet another paw test

In addition to the above info...
A test on 60 cats at Oxford University physiology lab concluded that most cats are right brain dominant. That's because the right side of the brain hemisphere controls movement on the left side of the body and vice versa. Right brain dominance also means that your cat is highly intuitive. While the test indicated this, other experts believe that cats are ambidextrous.....

Personal experience, I find that both of my cats prefer to use their right paws to scoop their food out of their dishes and ONTO the floor to "kill it" before they'll eat it!!! Roll Eyes

Well, from personal experience, I think cats are either left-pawed or right-pawed. My cat usually does everything with her right paw, and when he's playing, he usuall hits the toy with his right paw first. And when he paws at us to get our attention, he uses his right paw. So I think they do prefer one paw over the other. Roll Eyes

Yes, I think that simple repeated observation yields right-handedness for our cat.

I'm surprised that even came up. I have had a few cats. They have been able to do anyting and it doesn't matter which paw. Hmmm, I guess we are a little more alike than we thought.
