...and he stinks. I haven't got the time or the energy to do the whole tomato juice thing. He won't put up with it. He's a big guy and hard to wrestle to the floor. I shut him outside right now, but he's glaring at me through the french doors.
Am about to Fabreze him (lavender). Is this a good idea?

Any other quick fixes, please?

Thanks. dg Smile

Good heavens! News from Canada at last ! Please get right over to the correct thread and re-post.

Sorry I can't help. What's a skunk? Googling shows they are stripey things that like cat food.We don't have any of the species over here, even as pets (against the law to remove scent glands and they're no fun otherwise)

Tomato juice thing? What, you pour yourself some large bloody marys , to get over the shock?

dg - I imagine you've already found at least a stopgap for kitty's "new perfume." I don't know about Febreeze - would it hurt your cat if he licked it?
I didn't post last night because I was hoping someone could come up with a quick solution. But...

The Yahoo Q&A site had this answer to a similar question:
"I'm a pet groomer and I have tried all of the home remedies and all of the skunk shampoos and not one of them works as effectively as Thiotrol. It has only been out for a couple of years, if that. You spritz it on comb it in and no more odor. It is wonderful. You may have to go the vet or the groomer to get it but it is well worth the trouble.
You may think that you are still smelling the odor but unfortunately the residual stench that you smell is in you own nose and on the the things that the cat has laid on since being sprayed. You can spray the things but only time will help your nose."

But if you can't find a "quick fix," the only other sites I could find all recommend bathing. One suggests having someone to help you (A good time to find out how many true friends you have!) while you make your cat "de-scent" again! Here are a couple of them:
Skunk Odor Gone
De-SkunkYour Cat
Good luck!

Yes, he's locked outside. Big Grin Thanks for your suggetions, TIE. What I ended up using is this stuff: Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover.

This has got rid of the worst of it. He has a faint odour left.
Someone at work suggested equal parts tomato juice, 7-Up and dish soap. I'm going away for a week and leaving him outside. I'm not abandoning him; he has shelter and someone will feed him. If he still smells when I get back, I may try bathing him in the tomato juice combo.

Fred, if you've never smelled skunk odour, it's really disgusting. The smell attaches itself to everything. One time I was in a big grocery store late at night, and as I walked around, I could smell skunk. Sure enough when I got to the check-out there was a woman buying half a dozen cans of tomato juice to bath her dog that had been sprayed. She'd picked up the smell just by touching the dog. That was enough to make the whole store smell bad.

So far we've only had trouble with skunks and racoons in our yard. A neighbour lost all her peacocks when the coyotes ate them!

LMAO, sorry dg funny because I can relate. Pal got skunked several years ago late on a Sunday night in rural Upstate New York. Eek

Nothing open but a gas station / convenience store. I tried the tomato juice and 7-Up thing, did not work too well. Razz

Made him smell like stinky rotting tomatoes. Roll Eyes

I did get that Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover the next day at the hardware store. It worked fairly well but he still had a "smell" for a week or so regardless of how many times I bathed him.

We went home (4-1/2 hour drive) with him the next day. You'll get used to the smell in short time. Eek

By the time you get back stinky should be good to come in the house Big Grin

I left the stuff Upstate as we don't have skunks here on Long Island.

dg, I hope you are going where I think you are going and have a fantastic time! Smile
