First of all, let me say that I had absolutely no problems with my cats until I decided to use the scoop type litter. My advice to anyone that has no problems with their cats: NEVER EVER CHANGE THE TYPE OF LITTER YOU USE.

Anyway, can anyone help me with this issue. My oldest cat is about 15 years ago. A while ago, I decided unwisely to go with a new litter that was advertised. My oldest cat decided that she was not going to use it. When I went back to the other litter, she did not go back to it.
I have been cleaning up cat poop everyday from my basement, and I am at the end of my rope. I'm not sure how much more of this I can put up with. Does anyone have any suggestions?

and not just an older cat problem? I ask because my cat is old yet easily adapts from change of food to change of litter. I think if I were in your situation I'd first take him to the vet just for a quick lookover and make sure he isn't suffering from a tract infection or such. If he has a clean bill of health then try the old fashion way training kittens. Pick him up and put him in the litter. Keep doing that.

These are only suggestions. I hope perhaps I have helped a little.

I had the same problem with a cat of mine. He had to be an outside cat. I let him in, but had to be sure to let him out like you would a house broken dog.

Please let us know what works.
I have a 19 year old male that has not been using the litter box for a while. The vet says he's fine.
A new kitty came into his life eight months ago and I think he isn't happy about that.
I don't know what to do next...I love him and am having a big problem dealing with it.
I may have to find a home for the other kitty.

I have successfully introduced a kitten into an older cat's space, following the advice I read in a book on cat psychology.

The book said the commonest (and easiest) mistake that people make is to make a fuss over the kitten. This convinces the older cat he is not special any more. He loses his self-respect, and may stop grooming (or over-groom) and develop dirty habits.

The trick, the book said, was to praise the older cat for the kitten, as if he had produced it! When the kitten comes frolicking into the room, charming everyone, instead of going 'OOH! How adorable! (all eyes on the kitten), turn to the older cat and say 'What a clever cat you are, to have such a great kitten!' Pats and strokes to the older cat are not wasted, either.

No, the cat doesn't understand the words, but gets the message. This newcomer is somehow the cause of praise and approval for HIMSELF!

Then, in a different context, gently and reassuringly re-introduce the older cat to a clean litter box. (Might be best to have separate boxes, since urination is a form of territory-marking for cats.) Give him lots of cuddle-time, apart from the kitten.

When I was little, my sister and I each had our own cat. My cat suddenly started not using the box, and started going all over the place. He turned out to be ill. I would recommend that you have your cat checked out at the vet to rule out a physical problem. The vet would also be able to suggest a course of action for you. Good luck - I know how hard it is to deal with kitty poo problems (see my post below - with me its the kitten who wouldn't use the pan).
