Our momma cat (kittens are 6 weeks old) seems to be sick. We live far from a vet and are hoping some one may be able to help. She has not eaten in about a day, is throwing up clear liquid periodically, her belly and nose is very warm and she is moving very slowly. This all started about 24 hours ago. Anybody got any ideas?
A few questions and a suggestion...then more information might be available...
Is the mother still letting the kittens nurse? How old is the mother? Does she seem to be breathing ok? Is she still cleaning the kittens? Overall behavior? How often is she vomiting clear liquid? Do you know the health of the father? Are these indoor or outdoor cats?
Do you have a thermometer? If so, please take the mother's temp (rectally - I know gross...but something to know)...
She is not letting the kittens nurse, but they are eating food now.. She is a year old, breathing seems rapid. She is not cleaning them, doesn't want anything to do with them. She seem lathargic, just kinda laying around, weak. she's vomited twice overnight, then once again this morning.
The only thermometer we have is one of those electric ear ones, it said 102.5, but I'm not sure how accurate that is
Hmmm...interesting - normal cat temperature IS 102.5...
Are you keeping the mom with the kittens or does she have the ability to come & go??? There does reach a time that the mom cat HATES the babies - wants nothing to do with them and doesn't even want to be around them.
What have you tried feeding her - besides her regular food to see if she'll eat it?
How far are you from a vet?? If she doesn't eat or drink anything an continues to vomit, she will become dehydrated.
I can give you suggestions of some things to try, but nobody can guess why she's not feeling well. Nobody will take the place of a visit to a vet...I would suggest it.
She comes and goes as she pleases, she will not eat or drink anything, I guess we are ging to have to try to get her to a vet, we've tried tuna, and wet food.
By the way, it's kind of a coincedence. My great grandma and my neice were named Lydia.
Do you have a syringe??? Certainly not one with a needle...but just one of those that you may have gotten to administer liquid medicine in the past???
If so - - try giving her some liquid...you can use water - - or even chicken broth...not alot, just about .50 ml or something like that. See how she takes it...see if she keeps it down.
I love the name Lydia...I've never known anyone with the name, but named my cat that - suits her to a T!!
Why don't you pick up the telephone and call a vet... I cannot imagine one not giving you some information since you live so far away....Or call the Humane Society.. They usually have a vet on duty....
