What is good to give my cats for hairballs? They are Himalayans so they have long fur and are constantly grooming themselves and getting hairballs.

White petroleum jelly and mineral oil are two effective home remedies for helping your cat rid herself of hairballs.

For petroleum jelly, apply one-half teaspoon to your cat's nose, which he will promptly lick off. The jelly will melt in the stomach and lubricate the hairball, making it easier for your cat to pass. You can use petroleum jelly in this way once or twice a week.

For mineral oil, you can add it to your cat's food once or twice a week. Give him one teaspoon per five pounds of body weight. Make sure to mix it into her food instead of giving it directly by mouth because of the potential for inhalation. Be aware that both petroleum jelly and mineral oil can decrease the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, so don't give them in large doses or for prolonged periods.

To help decrease the amount of hair your cats swallows brush or comb them daily.

JerseyTomatoe had a couple of good suggestions. Some cats will try to shake it off if you put it on their paw (my cat does) - - if you use Petromault, they tend to like the smell and flavor of it and are easier to get to eat it.
My mom's cats are more than happy to eat it - - mine still jumps around the room like she only has 3 legs when I put the stuff on her paw.....

I think cause of her diet and the treats I give her that have the gooey stuff on the inside, she doens't have any hairball problems.

Brush your cat. Cats love to be brushed, and this greatly eliminates the hairball problem. Minnie growls when someone goes near her hairbrush.

I do brush them everyday and they do love it. But they still get a lot of hairballs. Thanks for the suggestions.

I can just imagine giving a cat mineral oil! I give my cat a dry cat food formulated for hair ball control and he has not had any problems since I've started feeding him that. I believe it is Purina Special formula - and I feed it to him as a snack - it does not replace his regular food.

Good luck!
