Some shedding increase is normal when the weather turns cold, the air gets drier and you turn up the heat, especially if he's an indoor and outdoor kitty- They go out in the cold and biology tells their follicles to work overtime on growing a thick winter coat, then they come in and the heat triggers the opposite adjustment... routine brushing and a bit more fat/oil in his diet may do the trick(My Mister got half a teaspoon of mayo every couple of days, Fred and George get to lick the dish whenever I beat eggs.) but if he's shedding a lot, more than regular brushing can keep up with,if it's localised, if there are any spots where he's getting bald or if there are other changes that began near the same time (changed eating habits, playing less, using the litterbox more or less frequently, etc) you need to get him checked out by a vet to rule out any serious health problems and to advise you about supplements and special grooming techniques.. you may very well have a perfectly healthy shedder.
