I noticed in another post that quite a few give tuna to their cats - - they love it, but, here is some info from books I have:

Canned Tuna has 2 drawbacks:

1) the vegetable oil it's packed in tends to rob the cat of vitamin E
2) Tuna ranks high on the list for mercury content.

As far as tuna-cat food - much of the tuna used in cat food comes from the red-meat part of the fish, which contains considerably more toxins than the white-meat tuna.

In addition - cats become "hooked" on tuna just like people do on crack cocaine.
(The above info is from a book called Natural Pet Cures, Dr. John Heinerman).

Also from a book called Reigning Cats & Dogs by Pat McKay - she indicates that tuna (like liver) causes an imbalance in the nutritional scheme of things - and in particular a deficiency of Vitamin E.

I know - - they love it, but it really is not good for them...

Thanks for the info, I used to feed my other kitty tuna all the time, I think it is also high in ash content. Best to give kitty kitty food, it is specially formulated for your little pal. wink

Most likely my cat will die from gout, or a bad squirrel, before dying from tainted tuna. Your cause is noble, and canned (tuna that is).
