I noticed in another post that quite a few give tuna to their cats - - they love it, but, here is some info from books I have:
Canned Tuna has 2 drawbacks:
1) the vegetable oil it's packed in tends to rob the cat of vitamin E 2) Tuna ranks high on the list for mercury content.
As far as tuna-cat food - much of the tuna used in cat food comes from the red-meat part of the fish, which contains considerably more toxins than the white-meat tuna.
In addition - cats become "hooked" on tuna just like people do on crack cocaine. (The above info is from a book called Natural Pet Cures, Dr. John Heinerman).
Also from a book called Reigning Cats & Dogs by Pat McKay - she indicates that tuna (like liver) causes an imbalance in the nutritional scheme of things - and in particular a deficiency of Vitamin E.
I know - - they love it, but it really is not good for them...
Thanks for the info, I used to feed my other kitty tuna all the time, I think it is also high in ash content. Best to give kitty kitty food, it is specially formulated for your little pal.
