This behavior is mostly seen in dogs; but on occasions it occurs in cats. I’m assuming that the 3-year-old male was the first cat in your home, and then the female came along. If the female was just recently spayed, you may have given her a little extra attention for the time needed. This probably confused him a bit, and now he feels the need to assert his position in the hierarchy ladder by behaving in this manner.

His behavior is an exaggeration of his dominance over the other cat. He feels that his dominance over her is his rightful place since he not only was there first but also is older than her. Here is a suggestion you can try, don’t expect miracles over night, it may take some time before things settle down.

If you have set feeding schedules and are NOT feeding free choice. Always feed him first, then the other cat. Always give him attention, play time, grooming, etc first, then the other cat. This will help him feel secure in his position between you and him and the other cat.

Thanks piggins, other than "that" they get along great, he sleeps with her, bathes her, and plays with her. I do know he sometimes feels "jealous" she is not one to sit back and wait her turn, she always pushes in on anything I am doing with Jerry. One good thing is she sleeps all morning so he usually hangs on me then and gets free time from her. We got her almost exactly a year ago and he just now started this. Oh, she has been spade since she turned 5 months and he was fixed when he was 6 months. Thanks again!

Maybe different cats just have different ways of showing their dominance. That may be your cat's "modus operandi."

My Gremlin (neutered, 8 years old) is extremely territorial, and jealous of Jesse (spayed, 6 years old).
He shows his dominance by intimidating her. (Bad boy!) He eats, then hovers over her until she leaves so he can have her leftovers. And occasionally he chases or fights her. (Of course, once or twice a year Jesse will take a swipe at Gremlin! Wink )
BTW - Gremlin weighs 2½ times what Jesse weighs! And he spends a lot more time with me... But some people are never satisfied... Roll Eyes

That is just hilarious, you know? I'm such a smart girl that I have one male who is three years old now, and I recently got a MALE kitten. Okay, I'm stupid. I should've gotten a female, but he was sooo cute. Anyway, my older male (Hope) doesn't appear to show his dominance at all. And the little kitty will run up to Hope like nothing doing and just take a swipe at him or will feel free to bat Hope's tail. They get into fights over these things and they do roll around, but nobody usually gets hurt even though Hope is at least four times his size (He's a HUGE cat). And Hope's mean--doesn't like strangers, won't eat out of anyone else's hand but mine, and will take a swipe at you just for walking by him. But ever since Peace (my newest male kitty) came along, Hope's been amazingly tolerate of the kitty. Gives him baths and everything.
So I'm just sayin'...some male cats will show that dominance thing, and some won't. Big Grin thanks for the laugh!
