My friend said her cat ate four of her birth control pills and asked me what I should do, but I wasn't exactly sure. She says he's acting normal as far as she can tell and apparently the only emergency pet hospital is far from her house. Is it an issue or should she make the trip right away. Thanks!

Is she sure that her cat took 4 of the pills? I have heard of dogs ripping apart plastic pill packs and chewing on the case. They end up gnawing at all of them breaking them apart. It seems kind of strange for the cat to have taken exactly 4 pills. Birth control pills come in a plastic case and the pills are in a pop out pack that isn't always easy to open. Just the plastic container that holds the pills can be a challenge sometimes. When you pop them open you have to really push and work them out of the pack. Some pill packs you have to rotate a dial to get the pill out of it. When I was on the pill it was hard for me to get the pills out and I have thumbs! LOL It could be possible that she forgot that she took them. If the green ones at the end of the pack are the ones missing, know that those are just sugar pills.

Strange things do happen so if your friend is certain that the cat took the pills then she could call this number. It is better to be safe than sorry.

I called the Center and was told that hormonal pills such as birth control pills can cause several types of blood diseases, and, unless the cat just swallowed the pills a bit ago, the hospital is the thing to do. If, however, the incident just happened, they said to induce vomiting by giving the cat one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide. That procedure can be repeated once. I assume that if the pills don't come up, that the cat needs to go to the hospital.
