I recently got my male cat, Hope, a small cow stuffed with catnip to play with. He doesn't care for it at all. The only time he'll play with it is if you rub it against him, and then he plays with it like any other toy that he plays with. The catnip has no effect on him whatsoever. Do I just have a weird cat? Well, I know I have a weird cat, but do any of your cats not respond to catnip? I'd like to see if I'm alone in this. ************************************************************** 07-12-02, 12:28 AM babthrower Is he neutered?
07-12-02, 12:00 PM JerseyTomater Most cats are affected by catnip, but not all. About 10% of cats do not respond to it. Whether or not your cat will respond to catnip has to do with her/his genetics. Kittens 6 months old and younger do not react to catnip yet.
07-12-02, 03:26 PM Clerky07 Yes, he is neutered. He is two years old.
07-12-02, 05:06 PM babthrower I saw something on DisCh about the active ingredient in catnip being the exact duplicate of a pheremone in the alpha female's urine. Apparently this pleases both male and female cats - but only if they're reproductively intact. One of 3 of my neutered cats has SORT OF liked catnip, but the others ignore it. I remember unneutered cats going NUTS over it, though, and playing for hours.
07-14-02, 01:38 AM Tree Hi!
I have 4 neutered male cats... and they ALL love catnip! I grow it in my garden to satisfy their needs!
Yes, for sure - most cats are affected by it, but a lesser percentage are not.
07-14-02, 01:41 AM Tree Oh, ya!
By the way, try growing your own! I think it's more potent than the stuff that's been sitting on a shelf for a year!! It's a form of MINT.

Tree, you're lucky. My neutered Tom is so crazy for catnip that, if I try to grow it in the garden he uproots it and eats the lot. I tried covering it until it was established, but within an hour of the cover being off, the whole plant had been devoured!
07-14-02, 11:32 PM Tree Yes, I know what you mean.... I had the same problem. I had to put chicken wire around the plants - I put one in the front for ALL cats to enjoy and one in the back for only my guys. Eventually the plants able to bear the nibbling cats, and the wire was removed.
Now, of course, the plants are pretty hardy and come back in full force in the spring each year.
I have more than enough for my cats and the entire neighbourhood!!!

07-24-02, 10:37 PM tsaeb Minnie's catnip mice disappeared two weeks ago and remain lost. First, Yellow disappeared, and the next day Red disappeared. I joked that if Green disappears, we will know if she ate it, because when she walks, we will hear a bell. My sister bought a replacement catnip mouse: it's a patriotic mouse. Patty has red, white, and blue stripes with stars of the same color. I will let you know if she recites, "One nation under God." Could she have eaten Yellow and Red? She meowed, "No!" when I asked her if she ate them.
07-25-02, 01:56 PM Tree There's a good chance that the mice are hidden under a sofa or cabinet. Ocassionally when I move a piece of furniture - my cats' mice will re-appear!
When I buy my guys the catnip mice, they IMMEDIATELY chew off the little leather tail!!!
