Last night I took off my wedding rings with no problem whatsoever. Roughly thirty minutes later, after a bath, I noticed something on the ring finger of my left hand. It was suddenly bruised on the side of the finger. Not like a new bruise that is kind of blueish, but like a 2 or 3 day old bruise that is dark purple and brown. On further inspection, I noticed it had started swelling. It swelled enough that I could not get my wedding rings back on. This morning it was the same, but it has swelled a little more, and the brusing has gotten darker (to the point where parts of it almost look black) and spread to cover the bottom of my finger. It goes just a little past the first knuckle. The really strange part is that there is no pain unless you really press on it. It doesn't hurt like you think a bruise that size and color would. I don't think it is an allergy to my rings because they are platinum and I have been wearing them for 4 years. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Probably you injured a small blood vessel, maybe when you took off the rings, even if it was easy. In the absense of pain, limitation of motion, or redness, it's highly likely to be of no great significance and will eventually go away. One far-out concern is whether it's a sign of another problem: easy bruising can indicate certain things such as disorders of clotting. Aspirin and similar drugs can cause it; so can certain blood disorders. If it's a one-time deal, it's unlikely to be of significance. But if easy bruising becomes a pattern, it needs to be checked.
