I have never been a big fan of chocolate, I would eat it, but I have always been a vanilla sort of guy. I'm not a big sweets fan either, I was like this as a kid and through my adult life. I'm 36 now.
About a month ago I started craving chocolate.
I find myself wanting things like chocolate cake, chocolate milk, chocolate bars, even the semi-sweet baking chocolate is on my mind.
Why would there be this sudden taste for a substance that I could go without in past?
It's not sugar I crave, just the chocolate. The Semi sweet chocolate seems to hit the spot better than say chocolate milk or chocolate bars.
Any Ideas about this, should I worry about it, should I feed the craving?
Thanks
David

I can share with you my thoughts on this matter. It appears that you might be craving chocolate because of a chemical change in your body. Here's the deal. Chocolate contains two marijuanalike related chemicals (cannabinoids) that neuropharmacologists believe provide therapeutic insights into treating a host of ailments, including depression. Because of your sudden craving it appears that your brain is trying to increase the production of a chemical called anandamide. This chemical activates the same cellular receptors as THC, the agent in marijuana smoke that causes a pleasurable "high". Shortly after the brain makes anandamide, an enzyme breaks it down.
Seems you are tying to compensate for a decrease of this chemical by substituting the cannabinoids found in the chocolate. Interestingly enough, dark chocolate, contains two to three times more of these compounds, per ounce, than milk chocolate.
Have there been some major life changes? Perhaps a new job, moving, loss of a loved one or anything that might cause depression? You might be stressed and to the point of depression. You might want to ask your doctor about it.....
....or maybe you just like chocolate!!
