My Dad is experiencing this problem. He's been losing consciousness for a few seconds and falling down. He comes back to sense when he is laid down horizontally.
This happened thrice in the early 1980s. Again in 1995/96 there was repetition of this thrice. Almost all leading practitioners in my city were consulted during this period. None of them could make out anything.
There were a few more attacks in 2006/07. This year it happened in Jan & he badly injured himself leading to a face surgery. He was admitted to hospital & several medical tests were conducted. But doctors are unable to diagnose the root cause.
A couple of weeks back he fell unconsciousness once again. Since then a significant difference in his BP is observed between standing & lying positions.
If anybody has a clue to this problem, please mail me. (My address is in my profile; just click on my name at the top of this post.) I have a brief write-up of his medical history. I can always share that with you.

Those sound to me like syncopal episodes. Have the medical practitioners done a 48 hour halter monitor to watch your father's heart activity? People can experience random irregular heart rhythm's that can cause fainting.
The difference in blood pressure between lying, sitting and standing is a big clue in the situation as well.
Good luck
