We hear all the time about our cholestrol. I know there is LDL & HDL. One of them being a healthy cholestrol. One time a nurse told me that there is a certain ratio they look for. If that ratio is in tolerance, the bad cholestrol is not so serious.

So how do these numbers stack up against each other??? What is a good healthy cholestrol number to maintain??? And more importantly how do we do it??? What should we eat or not eat in regard to our cholestrol???

Also there are medications dealing with cholestrol. What are the best medicines for high cholestrol??? What are their side effects???

Here is a site that has information about cholesterol and issues related to it. It does discuss medical treatments, so there is also advertising, so be prepared.

Hight cholesterol runs in my family. I was tested for it about 5 years ago and I was only 20 then and mine at the time was 240 then! So a doctor I know who deals in this all the time had me start taking niacin. This drug has been used to lower cholesterol since 1955. It has the beneficial effect of decreasing bad cholesterol (LDL) and raising the good cholesterol (HDL). Though it does have some unpleasant side effects such as flushing of the face and body, itching, stomach upset. These symptoms usually go away after taking it for awhile. Mine did. But, to be effective as a drug Niacin has to be taken in high doeses. Hight does of this could effect your liver so you would have to do this under a physican supervision only.

Just thought anyone with really high cholesterol may want to know that there is other treatment out there if need be.

I know this is kind of an old question but I found this article and thought it was a good fit. It is a discussion about some of the foods we can eat and avoid in helping lower the bad cholestrol.

There are many food (and food-related substances) you can eat to lower your cholesterol (no side effects!).

One is flax oil. You can get this at a health food store. It has to be refrigerated, and it spoils quicker than other oils, so we usually get 8 oz. at a time.

My sister had high cholesterol (266) and had a problem with it for about 10 years. She was put on cholesterol-lowering drugs. They lowered her cholesterol to 232. Then she found out her previously inactive Hepatitis C had become active. Because of this she had to quit taking the cholesterol-lowering drugs.

I suggested to her that she try flax oil. She was afraid to stop taking the drugs, but had no choice. After only a few months of taking 1 Tablespoon of flax oil a day, her cholesterol went down to 149. It had never been that low since it had been tested.
