Hi, I just got my braces tightened two days ago and they added the wire to the teeth at the back of my mouth. And just yesterday I noticed the wire that they just added is poking out at the end and cutting the inside of my cheek on both sides. My dentist's office was not open yesterday or today so now my cheeks are very cut up and painful. They just started bleeding and I can't even move my mouth hardly or eat anything. There office will be open Tuesday and they will probably fix the problem, but what can I do until then? How can I stop the pain? I've tried to put dental wax on it but it won't stay on and I can hardly reach that far back in my mouth. Any suggestions of what I should do? I couldn't even eat dinner. Thanks, Ca33

While it is for tooth and gum pain, Orajel should work. Get Maximum Strength Liquid. It almst has a pleasant taste, like the liquid a dentist uses to numb your gums before giving you a shot. It works within seconds. If that isn't available, get a product that has 20% benzocaine. That should kill the pain.

I don't know about things in your area, but it seems to me that you shouldn't have to suffer from Friday 'til Tuesday. Your dentist should have an answering service or an emergency number, and someone should be available to cover dental emergencies. I know my dentist does. Dental emergencies do happen!
If your dentist did this to you then you should certainly be able to get an emergency appointment... call the office or the dentist's home number. It is just not acceptable for you to have to suffer for two more days.

Unfortunaltely, my dentist does not have an emergency service or number. I guess the dentists in the USA are a lot better! I will definetely use the oragel until then for two more days. If anyone else has anymore suggestions, please post. Thanks for your help so far, Ca33
Really the only thing to do is to put the wax on there... it sounds like you're having trouble but it does help a lot if you can get it on there. It will come off after a couple hours but if you put enough on then it should keep the wire from cutting you. You might need to really gob the stuff on so that it sticks to the wires. Even getting a big blob of wax on the front of it (if you can't reach) should hold your cheek out so that it doesn't cut you.
Orajel will just numb it which might not be too good since you are shredding your cheek and if it goes numb then you might keep shredding it. It will help with the pain but do be careful that you get the wax on there before the gel.
