I have excessive sinus drainage down the back of my throat, hacking (not coughing, clearing the throat) up phlegm all the time. Mornings my congestion is terrible. I am constantly trying to clear my throat.

I also suffer from a deep in the ear itching usually the right ear. This is not constant it only happens once in a while.

I have tried decongestants, antihistamines, benadryl and allerest. None appear to help.

What is my condition called and is there an over the counter product I can get to treat it?

There are many possible reason for this. Do you have animals/pets? You could have allergies to them. I have a similar condition that occurs more frequently in the Spring and early summer when the pollens and plants do their thing.

If you have the means, perhaps you should see a doctor.

Sure sounds like allergies to me. They can cause sinusitis year round but symptoms are worse if you have seasonal allergies. The only way to find out for sure is to see an allergist and have a skin patch test done. It will check for 50 or more common allergies. Not only is cat and dog dander a sever allergen to many but also mold and dust...not to mention the seasonal grass, weeds, and trees.

As for over the counter treatments, Musinex is a behind the counter product that replaces the prescription Guaifenesin which is an expectorant. You don't need a prescriotion for Musinex but you do have to ask the pharmacist for it. You need to take it with a full glass of water and it will certainly help with the phlegm problem.

Georgia and Sherasi, could sinusitis be responsible for thick and sticky nasal mucus that builds up and dries behind the folds of cartilege in the nose, making it difficult to breathe? My granddaughter both have this problem.

Catty, everyone has mucus. You know, all it consists of is primarily water, salt, and proteins that trap dirt and germs. If there is too much, it drips down the back of the throat or out the nose. Most likely caused by allergies, infections, or even crying. When it's thick and dry often times that is related to dry climates, air conditioning, in-door heating, medicines, or dehydration. So Catty, I wouldn't necessarily say that sinusitis is responsible for your grand-daughter's dried mucus. More likely her environment.
